Medieval Education: 1,000 Years of Classical Education
by Christopher A. Perrin, PhD, Classical Academic Press
For those wishing to study the medieval tradition of education, I recommend the following books:
- Clark, Kevin and Jain, Ravi. The Liberal Arts Tradition: A Philosophy of Christian Classical Education: Camp Hill: Classical Academic Press, 2014.
- Leclercq, Jean. The Love of Learning and the Desire for God: A Study of Monastic Culture. New York: Fordham University Press, 1961.
- Knowles, David. The Evolution of Medieval Thought: Essex, Addison Wesley Longman Limited, 1997.
- Riché, Pierre. Education and Culture in the Barbarian West: From the Sixth through the Eighth Century. Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 1976.
Ravi Jain and Kevin Clark (in The Liberal Arts Tradition) have studied this period extensively and summarize the late medieval curriculum as beginning with Piety, Gymnastic and Musical (education in wonder) training in the early years, then moving to a study of the liberal Arts, and culminating in the study of Philosophy and Theology (usually in a university setting). I find this PGMAPT rubric a helpful generalization of late medieval curricula that can still refresh our thinking today.
